Each conference a select number of writers are awarded FELLOWSHIPS in FICTION, POETRY, and CREATIVE NON-FICTION. These competitive fellowships include a full conference tuition waiver, as well as free housing for the duration of the conference. Fellows will have full access to all conference activities and events and will have a fellow reading with reception. Fellows will be responsible for their own travel and food costs.
In return, the fellows will be responsible for assisting the core faculty in their respective genre workshops, including responding to conference attendee work during the workshop session. Additionally, the fellows will participate in the “Writers in the Classroom” portion of the conference, where they will spend a couple hours in the classroom of locals schools (Seacoast Collegiate High School, 9th – 12th grade) delivering a short craft lecture and interactive exercise on basic aspects of creative writing.
Criteria
The SWC Fellowships are awarded to writers who are actively publishing original work in distinguished magazines and literary periodicals, such as The Paris Review, Zoetrope, The Oxford American, The Southern Review, Poetry, Crab Orchard Review, Gulf Coast, etc., AND who have published at least one book and/or received recognition such as NEA grants, Whiting Awards, or other literary awards in the past six years.
Application
After paying the application fee ($22, button is below at bottom of page) each applicant should submit:
1. Genre of Fellowship
2. Current CV OR List of publications in last five years (place in text of email).
3. Writing Sample (attached): Either up to 10 pages of poetry, or 15 pages of fiction - sample should contain no personal data. Fiction should be double-spaced, normal font and margins. Poetry should have no more than one poem per page (up to ten total poems). Please save your sample as the first initial and last name and title of poetry or fiction in your manuscript (JSmith ForWhomTheBellTolls.pdf). Pdf, doc, docx acceptable. Email subject should be Fellow App (Poetry or Fiction) and full name (Fellow App Ernest Hemingway Fiction).
3. Please let us know if you plan to attend the conference regardless of financial aid decision (this will have no impact on our decision, and simply helps us anticipate total attendees).
