Each conference a select writer is awarded the CELIA BAKER VETERAN SCHOLARSHIP in POETRY OR FICTION. This competitive scholarship includes a full conference tuition waiver, and housing is offered at a steep discount for the duration of the conference (You pay $300 total for the week). Scholars will have full access to all conference activities and events, will be included in a workshop with faculty, and will have a group scholar reading with reception. Scholars will be responsible for their own travel and food costs.
In return, the scholars will be responsible for assisting the fellows, and will participate in the “Writers in the Classroom” portion of the conference, where they will spend a couple hours in the classroom of locals schools (one day only--Seacoast Collegiate High School, 9th – 12th grade) helping with basic aspects of creative writing.
Scholars are also required to perform some desk duties, light administration work, reception set up and break down and generally assist the conference directors.
Criteria:
This scholarship is awarded to Veteran (combat or noncombat) writers who are actively publishing (or set to publish) original work in magazines and literary periodicals, such as The Paris Review, Zoetrope, Blackbird,The Oxford American, The Southern Review, Poetry, Crab Orchard Review, Gulf Coast, Iowa Review, Chattahoochee Review, etc. Scholars cannot have a book published anywhere in their genre by the start of the conference.
Application:
After paying the application fee ($18, button above) each applicant should submit:
1. Name, Genre, Title (first poem or story)
2. Current CV or List of publications in last five years (place in text of email).
3. Writing Sample: Either up to 10 pages of poetry, or 15 pages of fiction - sample should contain no personal data. Fiction should be double-spaced, normal font and margins. Poetry should have no more than one poem per page (up to ten total poems). Please save your sample as the first initial and last name and title of poetry or fiction in your manuscript (JSmith ForWhomTheBellTolls.pdf). Pdf, doc, docx acceptable. Email subject should be Genre, Veteran Scholar App and full name (Poetry Veteran Scholar App Ernest Hemingway).
4. Please let us know your veteran status. Applicants will be asked to verify status.
5. Please let us know if you plan to attend the conference regardless of financial aid decision (this will have no impact on our decision, and simply helps us anticipate total attendees).
